Gauteng is landlocked but punches above its weight for weekend getaways — most are within 2 hours of Joburg or Pretoria.
Top Spots
Rietvlei Nature Reserve — Centurion. MEC camping right in the city. Game, birds, and a dam. Great for a quick overnight with the family.
Dinokeng Game Reserve — Hammanskraal. Free-roaming Big 5 reserve north of Pretoria. Self-catering chalets and camping. Excellent value.
Suikerbosrand Nature Reserve — Heidelberg. Rolling grassland, zebra, wildebeest. Basic campsites, very affordable, underrated.
Cradle of Humankind — Mogale City. A few small private camps on the edge of the Cradle. Peaceful, dark skies.
Magaliesberg (border with North West) — Most Gautengers treat this as their backyard. Mountain Sanctuary Park and Buffelspoort Dam area have solid camping.
