Gariep Dam barbel fishing — live vs dead bait, best rigs for big fish
Spent 5 days at this spot last school holidays. Here is the full breakdown.
Target species: largemouth bass, sharptooth catfish (up to 40kg), and yellowfish. We focused on the bigger fish and had a surprisingly productive session.
Tactics that worked: For the big barbel, use a whole fresh bream or shad on a circle hook, fish it on the bottom near channel edges. The catfish here are seriously large — 20kg+ specimens are common.
Access: Oviston resort on the northern bank or Gariep resort. Both have camping and boat launches.
Accommodation: Camped at the nearest caravan park — R314/night for a powered site. Facilities were better than expected.
Best time to visit: Spring when the fish are spawning and aggressive.
Tip for first-timers: Talk to the local tackle shop before you go — they know what is working that week.
7/10 destination. Will be back.

Did you get a guide or self-guided? I have been debating hiring someone local who knows the specific hot spots rather than trying to figure it out myself. Is the extra cost worth it or is the fishing good enough to find it yourself?
The licence situation is important to mention — I have seen conservation officers checking at this dam specifically. The online licence via dffe.gov.za is the easiest option and they accept the digital version on your phone.
Solid report. The bass on structure is exactly what I have found works at this spot. What line weight are you fishing? I have been using 12lb monofilament and getting results.
