Free State trails are mostly farm roads and mountain passes — not extreme but often beautiful and remote.
Notable Routes
Rooiberge Area, Clarens — Sandstone passes and farm tracks around the Rooiberge near Clarens. Scenic, relatively accessible.
Golden Gate Back Roads — Several gravel farm roads around Golden Gate give access to spectacular sandstone country.
Brandwater / Naauwpoort Pass — Remote Witteberg passes. Little traffic. Beautiful grassland and mountain scenery.
Lesotho Border Area, Caledonspoort — Gravel approaches to the Lesotho border. Good base for a Lesotho entry trip.
