Golden Gate Highlands National Park — Sandstone cliffs, blesbok, black wildebeest. Glen Reenen Rest Camp at the foot of the cliffs. Superb for hikers. Highly recommended.
Sterkfontein Dam Nature Reserve — Near Harrismith. Huge dam, sailing, fishing, good bird life. Affordable Ezemvelo camping.
Tussen-die-Riviere Game Farm — Southern Free State, where the Caledon and Orange rivers meet. Remote, game-rich, excellent birding. Very affordable.
Seekoeivlei Nature Reserve — Near Memel. Wetland birding. Hippos. One of the best wetlands in inland SA. Basic camping.
Rustler's Valley — Near Ficksburg. Private farm, music festival history, beautiful Maluti Mountain foothills.
