The Western Cape offers arguably the most diverse camping in SA — fynbos mountains, remote Karoo, whale coast, and the Cederberg.
Top Spots
Cederberg Wilderness Area — CapeNature-managed. Algeria campsite is the main base. Brilliant hiking, rock art, and rock formations. Book early for school holidays.
De Hoop Nature Reserve — Bredasdorp. Coastal fynbos, whale watching in season (Jun–Nov). Potberg section has vultures. Excellent.
Tankwa Karoo National Park — Remote, stark, and extraordinary. Low visitor numbers. Fossil-rich. Bring everything you need.
Wilderness National Park — Garden Route. Camping under milkwood trees next to the lagoon. Family-friendly.
Rocherpan Nature Reserve — West Coast. Tiny, quiet, birding paradise. Flamingos in season.
Die Dam, Montagu — Privately run but well-priced. Valley setting. Popular with climbers and mountain bikers.
