Jozini Dam tigerfish — gear, techniques, and best months
Spent 2 days at this spot last month. Here is the full breakdown.
Target species: tigerfish, largemouth bass, and catfish. We focused on the bigger fish and had a surprisingly productive session.
Tactics that worked: Tiger fish hit hard on lures — use steel trace to prevent cutoffs. The best areas are near the submerged riverbed channels in 3–6m of water. They school, so when you find one you usually find more.
Access: Jozini Tiger Lodge has boat hire. The area near the dam wall is restricted — check current regulations.
Accommodation: Camped at the nearest caravan park — R220/night for a powered site. Facilities were better than expected.
Best time to visit: Winter months when the water clears.
Tip for first-timers: Check the dam level before you go — it affects access dramatically.
8/10 destination. Will be back.

7/10 sounds about right based on my experience. The facilities is the weakest part. The fishing makes up for it.
What bait or lures were you using for the bass? I have been struggling to find what works consistently. Fly fishing with a size 10 Woolly Bugger has been the standout if that helps.
What bait or lures were you using for the catfish? I have been struggling to find what works consistently. Boilies in strawberry and banana are killing it lately if that helps.

Did you get a guide or self-guided? I have been debating hiring someone local who knows the specific hot spots rather than trying to figure it out myself. Is the extra cost worth it or is the fishing good enough to find it yourself?
I was there in February and the clarity were very different. Blue-green algae bloom in the southern arm — we had to move to the dam wall section. Always worth checking conditions before the drive.
