South African freshwater fishing licence 2025 — how to buy online
Spent 5 days at this spot last month. Here is the full breakdown.
Target species: largemouth bass and bream. We focused on the bigger fish and had a tough but rewarding session.
Tactics that worked: Fish at night when the water temperature drops. Use live bait on a float for best results.
Access: Valid freshwater licence required — R104 per season, buy online at dffe.gov.za or at any post office.
Accommodation: Camped at the nearest caravan park — R278/night for a powered site. Facilities were basic but adequate.
Best time to visit: After the first summer rains.
Tip for first-timers: Bring more ice than you think you need.
9/10 destination. Will be back.

9/10 sounds about right based on my experience. The boat launch is the weakest part. The fishing makes up for it.
The licence situation is important to mention — I have seen conservation officers checking at this dam specifically. The online licence via dffe.gov.za is the easiest option and they accept the digital version on your phone.
What bait or lures were you using for the yellowfish? I have been struggling to find what works consistently. Natural bait is always more consistent than lures at this spot if that helps.

I was there last month and the clarity were very different. Best conditions I have seen in 3 years there. Always worth checking conditions before the drive.
